FAQ

What is diastasis recti / core muscle weakness?

60% of women in postpartum period are affected by diastasis recti with 40% having persistent diastasis recti. This frequently occurring condition in pregnancy and postpartum where the core muscles of the abdomen (six-pack ab muscles) are separated. The separation can cause a bulge or ridge in between the muscles especially with straining or contracting the abdomen. The condition occurs due to the increased pressure from inside the abdomen causing the linea alba (thin connective tissue between the rectus muscles) to become overstretched and unable to come back together.

What is pelvic floor dysfunction?

Pregnancy is a common cause of pelvic floor dysfunction with worsening of the muscles during labor especially if it was difficult or long.

Pelvic floor dysfunction is very different from pelvic organ prolapse (organs stick out of the vagina/vulva or rectum and may require being pushed back inside).

What is acupuncture/dry needling?

The technique of inserting sterile stainless steel fine filament needles in strategic points of the body to stimulate a response based on musculature, fascial planes, and historically used sites with or without the use of low dose electrical stimulation

While insertion of any needle can carry the risk of side effects including but not limited to soreness, bruising, bleeding, infection, allergic reactions the vast majority of patients can tolerate the sessions well with significant improvement in function.

If you have had a pacemaker, defibrillator, baclofen pump, or other medical device inserted into your chest or abdomen, you are not a candidate for electrical stimulation. Please contact your physician to ensure you may have acupuncture in the desired location.
